Action Lab: Compliance & Legal

The Action Lab is built on a simple legal foundation: your speech is your speech. This page explains what that means in practice, and what to do and not do so your contributions stay clean under Arizona and federal campaign finance law.

This is not legal advice. If you have a specific concern about your situation, consult an Arizona election attorney.

What this is

The Action Lab is a publicly-available toolkit. Anyone can read it, copy it, and use it. The campaign publishes prompts and ready-to-post content; supporters use those resources to create their own posts on their own accounts using their own AI tools.

That means everything you post based on the Action Lab is independent political speech: your own speech, not coordinated with the campaign committee. Under Arizona campaign finance law (A.R.S. § 16-901 et seq.) and federal law, independent expenditures by individuals do not count against contribution limits and do not have to be reported by the campaign committee.

What this is NOT

  • Not coordinated communication. The campaign committee does not direct supporters to post specific things at specific times. The toolkit is public; you decide what (if anything) to use.
  • Not a campaign expenditure. Your AI credits + your time + your accounts = your contribution. It does not count against the $6,650 per-cycle individual contribution limit.
  • Not authorized to speak for the campaign. When you post, you are speaking for yourself as a supporter. Make that clear in your posts.

✅ What to ALWAYS do

  • Identify yourself as a supporter in your posts. Examples: "I'm supporting Jeff Dial because…", "As a Maricopa County resident, I'm voting for Jeff Dial…", "I support Jeff Dial for Clerk because…"
  • Use your own social media accounts. Not campaign accounts. Not impersonations.
  • Verify facts before posting. The Bio Context Block contains verified information. If your AI generates something not in that context, fact-check it against jeffdial.org before posting.
  • Link to jeffdial.org in your posts so people can verify and learn more directly from the source.
  • Stay respectful. Jeff's tagline is Integrity, Honesty, Professionalism. Supporter posts that reflect those values are far more effective than ones that don't.

🛑 What to NEVER do

  • Never solicit donations on Jeff's behalf. Only the campaign committee may legally solicit contributions. You can SHARE the donate page link as part of a personal endorsement ("here's where you can learn more or donate if you want"), but don't pitch contributions, run ads asking for money, or set up fundraisers in Jeff's name.
  • Never claim to be the campaign. Don't use Jeff's name as your handle. Don't imply the campaign authored your posts. Don't speak FOR Jeff. Speak ABOUT Jeff as a supporter.
  • Never coordinate with PACs or independent-expenditure committees. If you decide to set up your own pro-Jeff PAC or expenditure committee, that's a separate (and more regulated) activity that requires its own legal review. Do NOT mix it with the Action Lab toolkit.
  • Never impersonate Jeff or any other candidate. Don't use AI to generate audio/video of Jeff speaking words he didn't actually say. Don't generate fake quotes from opponents. Don't generate fake endorsements from public figures.
  • Never publish false statements about opponents. Defamation is illegal regardless of who's saying it. If AI generates something negative about an opponent, fact-check it before posting and skip it if you can't verify.
  • Never coordinate timing with campaign staff. Don't email the campaign asking "should I post X today?" If the campaign tells you when to post, that arguably becomes coordinated communication. Just decide when to post on your own.

A note from the campaign

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Most supporters don't read the legal small-print, and we appreciate that you did. The reason this page exists is simple: we want supporters to help aggressively, creatively, and effectively, and we want everyone to stay on the right side of the lines that protect free speech and clean elections.
